Helping agriculture reduce greenhouse gas emissions
The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) is a partnership between leading New Zealand research providers and industry bodies to invest in agricultural greenhouse gas emissions research. The centre was opened in 2010 and is hosted by AgResearch.
NZAGRC's goal is to discover, develop, and make available to New Zealand farmers and growers products, tools, and knowledge that enable the practical and cost-effective reduction of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
NZAGRC investment
- $4.85 million per year from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
- $4.85 million per year for 4 years from 2019 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Strategic Science Investment Fund.
Research focuses
NZAGRC is investing in New Zealand agricultural greenhouse gas emissions research. Its vision is to be an internationally renowned centre for research and development.
The centre's research mainly focuses on:
- ruminant methane
- nitrous oxide
- soil carbon
- integrated farm systems
- identifying and advancing Mātauranga and Te Ao Māori approaches to biological emissions reductions.
It also aims to:
- improve coordination of greenhouse gas research
- build New Zealand's research capacity by supporting students, early career scientists, technicians and senior scientists
- support summer school, Masters and PhD students in New Zealand universities through its Student Scholarship Fund.
Involvement with the Global Research Alliance
NZAGRC plays a major role in the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA).
- Its director is co-chair of the GRA's Livestock Research Group.
- It administers the Government's science investments in support of the GRA.
- It also administers the GRA's education award scheme.
